Navigating energy transition: global trends,
regulatory change and business impacts
This session provided a high-level overview of the energy transition, focusing on its key drivers,
mechanisms, and regulatory approaches. We explored why the transition is happening, highlighting the
global push for Net Zero, climate change mitigation, energy security, and evolving consumer and investor
expectations.
We then examined the primary pathways to decarbonisation, including renewable energy adoption, carbon
capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen, and energy efficiency improvements. A key discussion covered the
"carrot vs. stick" approach, comparing regulatory enforcement (such as emissions fines) with financial
incentives like tax credits and subsidies to encourage emissions reduction.
An overview of global and UK-specific policies followed, covering emissions trading schemes, carbon
pricing, and corporate disclosure obligations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive
(CSRD) and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). We also outlined key considerations
for companies, including compliance with sector-specific regulations, sustainability-linked financing, and
evolving ESG reporting requirements.
Finally, we discussed investment challenges and opportunities, including securing funding for green
projects, managing regulatory risks, and leveraging government incentives. The session concluded with
practical takeaways on how businesses can navigate the energy transition including staying compliant and
competitive in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.
